With 4-year old North West’s choice to name her new puppy Sushi, we felt it was prudent to acknowledge the growing sushi scene in Houston. In light of this name decision, recent competition surrounding sushi has become quite raw and we’ve hand-rolled our top 5 sushi restaurants in Houston for you to experience firsthand.

Roka Akor

The recent opening of Roka Akor in the 2929 Weslayan luxury high-rise is making headlines for its Instagram-worthy edible creations and stunning venue. Critically acclaimed for sushi and robata (charcoal grill), Roka Akor is already disrupting the sushi scene in Chicago, San Francisco, and Scottsdale. Just take it from the name: “ro” meaning hearth and “ka,” burning fire; Roka Akor is a warm place to gather with your friends over great food.

To satisfy discerning Texan meat-eaters, it even boasts certified Kobe and Wagyu beef flown straight from Japan. Plan ahead and grab one of the six select seats at the sushi counter to get up close and personal with the chef and enjoy dishes such as toro tartare with taro chips, caviar, and a quail egg, garnished with a flower.

MF Sushi

After experiencing world-class art in the museum district, check out the fantastic menu and contemporary atmosphere at MF Sushi. Chef Chris Kinjo is one of the best sushi masters in the country with his ability to create beautiful pieces of art from high-quality fish. One of our team’s favorite items to order is their chef’s choice nigiri ($25). The amount of flavor in each piece will tempt you to order another.

Also, a must-try is the avocado ball with spicy tuna or salmon with truffle mousse. The avocado ball serves as a much-needed break from the routine tuna tower or avocado toast. MF Sushi is a must check out sushi spot in Houston.

Aka Sushi House

Aka’s atmosphere caters to a variety of group-friendly experiences; it’s a Dindr favorite for meeting up with coworkers, friends, or new people through the app. You rarely end up paying full price at Aka; they have one of the best happy hours in the city. Happy hour runs ALL DAY on Saturday and Sunday and reverse happy hour runs on weekdays from 9 pm to close.

When you stack up fantastic sushi at a great price with half-off sake or wine on Tuesdays, it’s not hard to see why Aka is such a hotspot for groups of young professionals. Aka’s happy hour menu features a variety of sushi rolls starting as low as $4!

Uchi

It might be an Austin transplant, but Houstonians love Uchi’s high-quality fish flawlessly prepared by chef Lance Gillum. The menu rotates year around, creating a new dining experience each time you arrive.

Uchi can be quite pricey, so if you are a frugal sushi explorer, definitely check out their weekday happy hour starting at 5 pm. Paired with world-class sushi are Uchi’s outstanding desserts – of the best things on the menu, their fried milk dessert ($9) makes for a perfect finish to a great meal. Head over to Uchi and experience sushi made right.

Kata Robata

Many agree that Kata Robata is one of the best sushi restaurants inside the loop; Kata brings together consistency of flavor, quality of ingredients, and amazing customer service to create a memorable experience to share with good company. Their specials include fish flown in same-day from Japan; for a treat, go to Kata Robata on Tuesday for rare and unusual fish.

Their amazing selection of sake and specialty cocktails includes one of our favorites – a spicy take on the Pimm’s Cup with habanero and yuzu. It is not to be missed. The stellar food and drink menu, atmosphere, and top-notch service affirm Kata Robata as one of our top 5 sushi restaurants in Houston.
